As an integrated agency we can often be found shouting the benefits of social media from the nearest rooftop. We love social media; we believe it has a huge part to play in the marketing mix and we’ve won numerous awards for our work in this arena.


So it may come as somewhat of a shock to people to hear we’re no longer using Facebook.

“Why?” you may ask. Don’t worry, it’s not about the selfies, baby pictures and Candy Crush requests. For us it’s all about return on investment.

For some of our clients Facebook is the perfect platform to promote their products and services. Many of them regularly convert conversations into leads or find ways to improve perception and customer service through the network.

Take City College Southampton for example, which uses Facebook as a vital tool to communicate with both existing and potential students. Or Associated British Ports, which is able to break down physical barriers and let the community see inside the port through its photos and videos.

For Carswell Gould as a B2B company within the professional services industry, using Facebook just doesn’t give us the value we need from the time we invest into it. The type of people and businesses we want to connect with simply don’t use that channel to make decisions on marketing communications agencies.

Facebook has been great as a tool to show potential new employees what it’s like working here but we’ve decided we can do this through other social media channels and are now focussing our energies on Twitter and LinkedIn for this and potential customer engagement.

We’re not the only ones bidding farewell to Mark Zuckerberg’s multi-billion dollar creation either. Eat24 left the site in style last year with this hilarious break up letter.
